Deworming at C2R
We place a high importance on deworming. From the time
a foal is born, to the time it dies, it is bombarded with parasites,
which travel through the blood stream and digestive track, causing all
kinds of damage, including breathing problems, colic, and death.
As early as 4 weeks old, you can begin to deworm your horse, with the
help of your veterinarian and a very inexpensive fecal exam, you can
prevent the damage and your horse will be healthier throughout its
lifetime.
We choose to feed a daily feed-through wormer all year
around and use a paste-wormer in the spring and in the fall.
The advantages of this type of program are as follows:
-
The
paste-wormer kills adult stages of worms, and the feed through kills
the worms in the larvae stage, before they have time to do damage.
-
There is
no build up of resistance by the worms to this type of worming.
-
The worms
are destroyed at the larvae stage, so the manure is safe to spread
on your property.
-
It is such
a minute amount of wormer on a daily basis that it is safe for all
types and ages of horses and the environment.
Take a look at this
diagram and see which
areas are affected by which type of worms.
