Training

Starting a horse, whether the horse is young or old, requires consistency and gentle leadership.  We recommend a minimum of 6 weeks for basic training, or 3 weeks for conditioning of a horse that is already trained to walk trot and canter on command.

At a minimum of 6 weeks basic training, your horse learns to be respectful on the ground, how to move away from pressure applied to each part of its body, and how to balance himself at the walk, trot, and canter on the correct lead - your horse will carry himself properly and have the correct balance and muscles he needs to carry you before we ever get on and ride.

The horse also learns how to take direction and listen to the lightest cues.  All ground training transfers into the saddle where we instill from the saddle the lessons learned from the ground.  We encourage you to be involved in the training process (included in the training fee) so you and your horse can become a team and really make a strong connection.

Continued training at C2R after the minimum of 6 weeks ensures a solid foundation for your horse and allows us to fine-tune cues, encourage a proper head set, and develop light cues under saddle.

Because we don't have an indoor arena and the overhead costs that go with it, C2R can keep our fees reasonable.  For a horse that has never been trained, we recommend a full 6 weeks of training and you will need to continue the work once the horse goes home to ensure a solid foundation.  For a horse that just needs conditioning, we recommend a full 3 weeks of training. Some horses may have specific problems you would like to work on - after a two week evaluation period, we will determine the length of training needed to meet your goals and help you stay on track.

The fee includes keeping your horse at our modest facility, with training on a daily basis including grooming, feed and water, working on ground control and working towards saddle training at your horses' individual pace.  We move forward only as fast as the horse learns.  While your horse is at C2R, you are welcome to come and learn with your horse, at no added fee.  We specialize in building a better relationship between you and your horse.

At least 2 weeks prior to bringing your horse for training, C2R recommends that the horse undergo professional dental examination for any sharp edges or wolf teeth that could interfere with your horses' progress in training.  Balancing your horses' feet is another important factor in training - C2R can provide farrier service at an additional fee depending upon your horses' individual needs.

Your horse should be in good health before training for optimum results - not too fat, not too thin.  All shots must be up to date and the horse should have been wormed prior to bringing to training.  These simple few requirements will help your horse get the most out of its time in training.
